[1] This expense was put to the membership as a promotional tool, and informally approved. [2] To retiring secretary Kim Newman Giffen [3] These are awards to students who won various math competitions such as the Calc Bowl, the AP competition and the cartoon contest, all coordinated by UW and one or more of the community colleges in cooperation with various junior and high schools. [4] This amount includes postage IDRs. Note that the production costs exceed the contest expenses. If we combine this accounting with the last report for 1/12/06-4/11/06 where the costs were $1245.26 and the registrations were only $346, the loss is actually greater. In summary, 1/12/06 through 1/11/08 we lost $1375.44 on the Math Contest. It should be remembered that the 2006 contest was rescheduled because of PAWS and many fewer students participated, and some sites discounted the registrations to encourage schools to participate. [5] Mostly ($166) denim shirts for the Officers and Regional Reps . [6] Mostly travel of WCTM representatives to national meetings.

WCTM minutes from 1/7/2005 meeting Welcome by Dave Petersen at 11:30 for the general membership meeting held at the Math and Science Conference at Casper College. Those in attendance were: Cyndi Moravek, Heather Witt, Mary Ohnemus, Sid Parker, Marcie Scarlett, Doug Jackson, Chuck Newberg, Birney Holberg, Cynthia Smith, Marv Majeres, Jennet Ballinger, Shane Costello, Jean Klanica, Maura Williams, Kendall Jacobs, Sylvia Parker, Al Seckel, Pete Wildman, Grant Patik, Pat Clark, Sheila Bainter, Nancy Merrill, Lee Zimmer, Jody DeHaven, Mary Moler, Mark Kuhlman, Dave Petersen, president, Michele Costello, president-elect, and Kim Newman, secretary. Lynne Ipina, treasurer, was absent. Motion by Cyndi Moravek, seconded by Nancy Merrill, to accept the minutes of 1/10/04 general meeting passed unanimously. Old Business: Discussion was held concerning increasing WCTM membership. Michele Costello shared that we will be doing membership cards; monthly e-mails which highlight important articles and such; getting corporate sponsors to provide membership packets; working on setting up regional representatives to work on membership; the Random Walk Newsletter will be ready by April (electronic version); if anyone has ideas for the newsletter to send them to Michele; the state math contest is set for Tuesday, April 19, and the team of test writers will be working on the state math test next week; and the participation in the state math contest is increasing. Dave shared that Kendall Jacobs, with Casper College, needs someone to take over the job of scheduling presenters for the Math and Science Conference. Contact Dave or Kendall if interested. It was agreed that the conference should stay at Casper College. Everyone was encouraged to fill in the evaluation and offer suggestions to improve the conference. There was discussion about wanting an increase in the number of participants and presenters. New Business: It was moved by Pat Clark, and seconded by Mary Molar, that WCTM send a delegate to delegate assembly with the national NCTM Conference in Anaheim, CA. The national conference will be April 6-9, 2005. Motion passed. Trent Blankenship suggested to the legislature that teachers in the state receive an increase in pay. At this time that action has failed. Discussion followed about how we could get our legislators to realize that Wyoming needs to be competitive with other states in recruitment and retention of qualified teachers, especially in mathematics. The suggestion was made that all WCTM members should write their legislator as well as encourage the general public to write also. The WCTM officers will compose a letter from the organization sharing our concerns. It was suggested that we contact NCTM’s Government Relation person to find out what all should be included in such a letter. Sylvia Parker, UW, suggested that real situation be shared in letter about problems in hiring qualified teachers in the state. She also suggested that we call our legislator or talk to them face-to-face when possible.
The next item of business was election of officers for 2005-2007: Michele Costello – President Shane Costello - President Elect Kim Newman – Secretary Lynne Ipina – Treasurer It was moved by Mary Molar, and seconded by Pat Clark, that we accept the list of candidate for office. The motion passed.
General information: Michelle Costello talked about the Middle Level Mathematics Program at the University of Wyoming. It is a great way to meet other teachers from Wyoming, to improve your mathematical knowledge, and to receive a master’s degree. It is a two years program. Deadline for registration is February 1, 2005. Scholarships to pay for tuition are available for the summer session. Meeting was adjourned about 12:30. Respectfully submitted by Kim Newman WCTM Secretary

Invite pre-service teachers at a reduced fee through a WCTM scholarship. Jan Tuomi, with McREL, said that McREL would be glad to do follow-up on the workshop. Jan is the point of contact for Wyoming at McREL. McREL serves a 7 state region. She advocates for the use of resources from McREL for these states. McREL is providing intensive professional development in leadership roles for K-8 mathematics. Conferences are coming up. Can get information at www.McREL.org. Emphasis is on math coaches for elementary and middle school. Deadline for team registration is January 24. McREL will pay all expenses except school district needs to pay sub cost. Participants would only pay for college credit if desired.
The last item was drawings for WCTM prizes. Fred Longhart gave the certificate and Cyndi Moravek won the $72 gift certificate to be used for a membership or catalog order.
